Homeless Veterans Project

Homeless Veterans ProjectSpecial thanks to Rotarian Bill Phillips for bringing the Homeless Veteran Mat project to our attention.  All of us shop at businesses (grocery stores, Wal-Mart, Target, etc) that use plastic bags for your purchased items.  Our Board of Directors voted at its most recent meeting to support the Boeing Homeless Veteran Mat project and we challenge you to collect these bags and bring them to Rotary tomorrow July 26th.  Please read more information from Bill about this project in the next paragraph.

“From working with various organizations around Huntsville and Madison County, we know there are many homeless veterans that live within Huntsville, Madison County and the surrounding area.  From visiting various homeless sites we also know the living conditions are austere, and that many sleep on the ground with little, if any comfort.   The Boeing Company, working with organizations within Huntsville, started a project to provide our homeless veterans a sleeping mat made up of plastic grocery bags.  Each mat takes approximately 800 grocery bags to make.   Our original need was for about 100,000 bags; we are now down to approximately 15,000 bags.  Between now and the end of August we must collect the remaining 15K bags.  Our intent is to have at minimum 100 mats produced by the end of October 2016, which would be provided during “Veteran’s Week” to Veteran’s charities and Veterans themselves.  This project serves a dual purpose.  First it provides homeless veterans with the ability to be protected from the ground and some level of comfort (can be used in a homeless shelter as well).  Second this is a “green” initiative which takes bags that would likely end up in landfills and puts them to good use.  We greatly appreciate all support!“
